Sven, While what you say may be true, it's not generally a good idea to "rely" on compiler optimizations (IMHO, anyway) to do the work for you. Just for the record, though, I'm not criticizing the author, only the code. profile, then come back. It's very likely that the compiler optimizes the branch inside the loop away for you. I agree that it is not very good looking or readable, but I doubt there would be a performance difference.
