some gtk apps broken fonts with xfree cvs

gtk+-1.2.10 has broken fonts with Xfree cvs, the iso10646-1 fonts are still
giving problems...  most noticible programs with the "blank character" boxes
are gaim (can't see im messages) and gnapster (console tab).  both have same
problem.  this problem was "suppose" to be fixed, but is obviously not.  hope a
developer sees this before the next release of Xfree.  

only solution:  delete all the lines with iso10646-1 in the fonts.dir of Xfree,
and that is not a good solution.

xfree people have confirmed this...so what's the deal?
