selecting first item in GtkOptionMenu

I have a GtkOptionMenu that I would like to select
the first item. Using gtk_option_menu_set_history()
doesn't work because that doesn't emit the "activate"
signal for the first widget. I actually need the
"activate" signal to be emitted. How could I do
this?
