glib 1.2.58/gtk 1.2.8 error

Hey, I am trying to install gtk-1.2.8 to install the new gimp. I have compiled and installed
glib with no errors, but when I try to install gtk it abends with the error that it cannot find
glib-config and glib-1.2.8 is not found.

my ld.so.conf entries are:

/usr/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib
/usr/local/lib

...is there something i am missing or is there a ./configure  argument that I need to run to get
gtk to recognize the glib library?
