Another option is to use pop-up windows (if what you're drawing is
rectangular), i.e. the approach taken by tooltips.

You can even make the pop-up windows non rectangular (with a shape
mask), but for complex shapes like squiggles or something, it's
probably not that easy an approach. Would probably work well for
e.g. a circle or unfilled rectangle though.
