compiling glib / gtk+ 1.2.10

When compiling glib/gtk+ 1.2.10 on IRIX 6.5 with cc (7.2.1) I get
the following error messages when running applications:
GLib-WARNING **: (): unable to handle wide char strings
GLib-WARNING **: (): unable to handle wide char strings
GLib-ERROR **: could not allocate 527133531 bytes
aborting...
Abort
Are there any options needed for the configure script? I only used
the optimization option -O2
