Problem w/ ./configure error

I am sorry for the newby question, but...
When I do a ./configure on my Solaris 2.6 system, I get the message below.
I have GLIB 1.2.9 installed. How do I set the variable?

*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to glib-config.
configure: error:
*** GLIB 1.2.8 or better is required. The latest version of GLIB
*** is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/.
