how can I purge gtk-config* from my configure files?

Thanks for the pointer. I downloaded the gerd source and tried to build it,
but it appears gerd still wants the so-I-have-been-told vile gtk-config.
How do I purge it from configure? I tried autoconf. No luck. Checking the
version, I see that I am running the latest version (2.13). I tried
checking out the latest autoconf sources from CVS, but that failed with

    % cvs -z3 -d :pserver:anoncvs subversions gnu org:/cvs checkout autoconf
cvs [checkout aborted]: connect to subversions.gnu.org:2401 failed: Connection refused

There must be some recipe for the autoconf-challenged like myself to switch
from gtk-config or gtk-config-2.0 to pkg-config without having to manually
edit configure files. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Sorry to be a pain...
