Garbage collection in GTK

I have the following questions, could anyone kindly to answer me, thanks!

1.  In GTK, is there any "garbage collection"?
     How does GTK deal with this kind of issue?

2. How does GTK deal with gif, or jpg format?
    In that book, only xpm format is mentioned.
