There have been several attempts (such as Jay Painter's gnome-wm in
GNOME CVS, and some others I forget), but none of them have made it to
the crucial level of usability required to bootstrap an open source
project. I think writing a WM in GTK+ is actually sort of hard, GTK
isn't designed for it. Also it's unclear that you can just use GTK
themes for your WM, because you need the themes to support special
window-manager-specific widgets to match more than the colors/backing
pixmap. Sawmill can already match the colors/pixmap without linking
GTK, though I think Sawmill's GTK-matching theme could be made a lot
nicer by someone with some graphic sense.
