A question about gtk_entry_get_text

I've some problems in gtk+ ver. 1.2.0.
Well, I thimk the funtion, gtk_entry_get_text(), make a problem.
I can't get any character from entries.

But, in GTK+ 1.0.6 , that function didn't make a problem.

void simple_input_number_data()
{
  GtkWidget *table, *label, *button, *entry;
  GtkWidget *inputnum = NULL;

  GtkTooltips *tooltips;

  inputnum = gtk_window_new(GTK_WINDOW_TOPLEVEL);
  gtk_window_set_title(GTK_WINDOW(inputnum), "NUMBER OF DATA");

  table = gtk_table_new(rows, columns, FALSE);
  gtk_container_add(GTK_CONTAINER(inputnum), table
);

  entry = gtk_entry_new_with_max_length(3);
  num_data[0] = gtk_entry_get_text(GTK_ENTRY(entry));

gtk_table_attach_defaults(GTK_TABLE(table), entry, columns - columns + 1, columns -  columns + 2,rows - rows + 1,rows - rows + 2);
  gtk_widget_set_usize(entry,10,20);
  gtk_widget_show(entry);
}

This is a part of my program that didn't use callback function for gtk_entry_get_text().
This way make a problem?

I can't use callback functions for each entries so that I must use many entries.
Any other way in this case?
