You might look at the sources to vim5.4 (www.vim.org). It has a GTK
front-end and does all sorts of syntax highlighting. I expect that they
are not using the GTK text widget, however (largely because it sucks --
but I understand that Owen & Co. are rewriting it to greatly reduce the
suck factor).
