GDK theads

Greetings.

I'm currently trying to work out how to use the GDK functions
gdk_threads_enter() and gdk_threads_leave(). The trouble is, the
GDK/GTK documentation is rather thin on how to use them, and I
can't find any examples on the web pages or in tutorials.

So, could some kind soul briefly describe how to use them, or
point me to some example code?
