No! Don't do this. You'll mess up with the configuration that the package
manager (rpm, dpkg, etc.)  carefully created. If you upgrade to a new
version of GTK, you have old include files which will cause very strange
errors (compile time and run time). It is really a matter of compiling
with the correct compiler flags and the gtk-config utility knows exactly
which flags to use.
