Because some parts of GNOME need Berkeley db, otherwise they don't work.
So yes, you need to install it. Assumed that you are using a Linux system
(you didn't tell), just install it with the distribution's package manager
and try to recompile GNOME. If you're using Linux, it will be much easier
to download the appropriate GNOME packages for your distribution.
