NewLines in a GtkText Widget

Hi,

my problem is the following: how to get NewLines into/from a GtkText
widget? If I use the return Key, then a new line will be
inserted in the GtkText widget when entering text. But if I read the widget's contents
by gtk_editable_get_chars (<widget>,0,-1), then the output contains
no control character, especially no NL.

What do I wrong?
