I have this exact code done in Gtk--.  It does not use GtkDrawingArea 
or GnomeCanvas, but rather the layout widget directly.

It uses that background pixmap as a psuedo drawing area 
to make a Layout or Fixed widget contain paintable background.
This is good for making things like widget displays or labview
type displays.
