Changing the X11 mouse cursor

How could you change the X11 mouse cursor?
I've been eyeing the functions (like gdk_cursor_new_from_pixmap and such)
but cannot quite figure out how to use them.

It's my assumption that you need an XBM with the cursor drawing, and another
one with the mask, but if somebody could quickly run through the process
of changing the cursor it would be great.
