package boxes and tables

does anyone know of a better tutorial on laying out ui then the one on
gtk.org?

no matter what i do i can't seem to get the ui to lay out the way i want
it. it seems impossible to do a cool ui when every hbox, vbox, and table
divides the window into equal parts.

anyone who can explain or show code or both i would really appreciate
it.
