If you don't need the item again:
gtk_widget_destroy (item);
If you do need it again:
gtk_object_ref (GTK_OBJECT (item));
gtk_container_remove (GTK_CONTAINER (menubar), item);
/* insert it somewhere else */
gtk_object_unref (GTK_OBJECT (item));
