Newbie's first issue: compiling problem...!

hi,

i've made the acquaintance of gtk yesterday using the gtk+ tutorial...  when i
compile the traditional "helloworld", i get the following error:
~/gtk_tutorial.990225/examples/helloworld/helloworld.c:67: undefined reference
to `gtk_container_set_border_width'
i've checked the libraries listed by gtk-config, everything seems to be there.
did i overlook something else?

any help would be appreciated.
