Run Time Error

hi,
i am new to GTK users, i have installed GTK with --prefix=/usr/gtkinst/gtk+ 
as argument for ./configure for both glib-1.2.3 and gtk+-1.2.3.
i tried to run helloworld example, after make is succeeded, i ran 
./helloworld but i got the following message:

error in loading shared libraries
libgtk-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
---------------------------------
although this file exists at /usr/gtkinst/gtk+/lib

what should i do ?
