Setting background color programmatically

Well, I feel like I'm missing something basic, so I have to ask:  How do
I set the background color in a GtkWidget under program control?  I have
found the RC file, but that is not what I want.  I confess that I am
baffled.  Does anybody have a code example that would demonstrate?
