How to set background pixmaps on buttons?

I tried to set button->style->bg_pixmap[0] .... bg_pixmap[4] and then
gtk_style_set_background() on that button, but has no effect.
I even tried gdk_window_set_back_pixmap() on button->window, but it
doesn't work. Why?
