header files and library versions dont match.

I'm trying to install X-Chat. When I ./configure it it gives me an error
saying that the header files and the library versions for GTK don't maech.
What is the problem here? I reinstalled GTK and I still go the errors. What
can I do to fix this? Any help or ideas are appreciated, big or small.
