Sorry.  Sorry, sorry, sorry.

I added a check to see that I didn't try to close a NULL file pointer. and
made sure the pointer was always NULL if it wasn't valid.  The program now
runs fine.  I just coul;dn't see how that was affecting anything when the
function wasn't being run.
