Just to add my $0.02 on this list:

When S&P started gtk there was no good portable C++ compiler. The only
non-proprietary (and so, portable) one was g++ 2.7, which is just crap.
Things have changed with egcs, but this is not the point.

I don't this was a strong argument at that time (although it is currently
a strong one).

And in particular, Gimp default language.
Gtk isn't called Gimp ToolKit for nothing (it was call Gimp T.K., then
GNU T.K, then Gimp T.K again AFAIK)
