./configure host

Can someone help with a problem running ./configure on gtk 1.0.6
I get this:

checking host sytem type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you
must specify one

I am running RedHat 5.1 on a Pentium from the command line outside of X

Any help would be appreciated.
