Hi Rafael,
This is not really an answer to your question but rather a suggestion
to make things differently.
readline provides a way to periodically call an "external event handler"
function. In TCl/Tk case, that would be "Tk_DoOneEvent", and this has an
equivalent in gtk (which don't remember the name...).
As long as Octave is linked with readline, you can suerly change this hook
function to whatever you want.
You may check that possibility if your problem persists.
