Removing a Widget from a Menu

I'd like to remove a widget from a menu. There are all sorts of ways to
add widgets (append, prepend, insert) but no function for remove.

Should I recreate the menu with the one widget I want to remove,
missing, and then replace the old one with the new one? Or is there a
function somewhere else that I'm missing? I'm hoping it is the latter...
