I can confirm that gtk-- does work with 2.7.3 under Linux RH5, but it does
have some problems.  Lots of weird runtime errors when you go over a certain
number of objects staticly defined in the private area  of the class.  All
of this went away when I upgraded to 2.8.1 (after spending several days
trying to figure out what I was doing wrong and discovering compiler bugs).
I'd highly recommend the upgrade route.
