overriding keys in widgets

Is there a way to override the behavior of certain keystrokes in widgets?
I'm thinking about the UP/DOWN keys of the entry widgets...
Is this what gtk_widget_install_accelerators function does? (Is there any
examples showing how to use it - I haven't found any information at all on
the
accelerator functions.)
