gtk 1.0.4 compile problems

GTK 1.0.4 compiles fine, but all the apps in gtk/ (simple, testgtk, ...) die
with the following error:

(0)<mcelrath@zathras:/usr/local/src/gtk+-1.0.4/gtk> ./simple

** ERROR **: unsupported type `(null)' in signal arg
Abort

After install RedHat's control-panel app dies with:

(0)<mcelrath@zathras:/usr/local/src/gtk+-1.0.4/gtk> control-panel

** WARNING **: Creating pixmap from xpm with NULL window and colormap
control-panel: error in loading shared libraries
: undefined symbol: gtk_tooltips_set_tips

Have I done something wrong? Might the latter problem be due to version
incompatibilities (was originally written for 0.99.29?), or are the two
problems related?

I'm using gcc 2.8.1 (and compile had no problems), glibc 2.0.6, ld.so 1.9.6
