Hi,
I installed perl 5.004_04 in my attempts to fix things (previously,
4.0 was installed), but it is possible that I failed to remake some
file in the automake distribution when I reinstalled it.

Good!

I'm not sure what caused the problem. However, I just did a 'cvs -z9
update' on gtk+, and the problem has _gone_away_ (yipee!). Either
someone fixed the problem in the meantime, or the update time-stamped
something so that a problematic file somewhere was rebuilt correctly.
gtk+ is happily building on my system as I type.
Thanks,
-Chris
