glib-1.1.9 and gtk+-1.1.9 problems

Hi!

I am a new guy to linux and am looking for some help with the 
installation of glib-1.1.9 and gtk+-1.1.9.  I am running into some 
problems that I can simply not work out with the documentation given to 
me.  I am currently running Red Hat 5.2 and have GIMP installed on it.  
When I installed 5.2 it also installed gtk-1.1.2.  

Today I downloaded glib and gtk both version 1.1.9 so that I could 
support the desktop themes in GIMP.  I followed the INSTALL files and 
ran into some problems.  I downloaded them into /root and just made just 
gunziped and untared them in root.  My 2 directories are 
/root/glib-1.1.9 and /root/gtk+-1.1.9.  I then completely installed glib 
with no problems, but I could not "./configure" gtk+-1.1.9.  The program 
told me that it could not find the glib-1.1.9 version.  I think the 
problem is that the /bin/glib-config file is NOT IN /bin/glib-config, 
but is in /root/glib-1.1.9.  I tried to mcopy the file into bin, but 
then when I try to run the "./configure" for gtk+-1.1.9, it says 
"permission denied" to the newly copied glib-config file.  Well, I need 
some help and any would be GREATLY appreciated.  If you can e-mail me my
