Problems compiling gtk+-1.1.9

I have gtk+-1.1.9
FreeBSD 2.2.7
X11R6, XFree86 3.3.1

configure runs without problems. "make" fails in the "po"-directory:

make all-recursive
Making all in po
make: don't know how to make deNONE. Stop
*** Error code 1

Stop.
*** Error code 1

Stop.

I think it has something to do with localization?! My LANG-variable is
like this: LANG=de_DE.ISO_8859-1.

What am I doing wrong?
