Themes

Hi!
It must be an annoying question already but... How do I make themes to
work with Gtk 1.1.7? I fetched gtk-engines off the CVS but it seems to 
be bits and pieces: I wanted to automake and autoconf it to get configure
but it yelled at me about missing files. So, what should be compiled and
installed? gtk.themes.org does not say much about it.
