Yes, after some putzing around I managed to do
'configure -enable-gnome=no'
which built Gtk-- just fine (without gnome). While not
a perfect solution, it allows me to get on writting my
app (which doesn't used gnome stuff (yet)) so (for
me) all is well ...

yes, I think ./configure --without-gnome should work(tm)...
(I havent ever tried it though, I sure hope it does work :)

this looks like "gtk+ old version" -bug :) We had great difficulties
with updating gtk-- to support all of those millions gtk+ versions, so
we now try to only support stable releases(with little success
currently, hopefully more success with 1.2 gtk+) and the cvs
version...
