menu separators (hard way)

hi all.

I'm a gtk newbie. i'm trying to make menu tree in the hard way (as
an old tutorial doc say). what i can't menage to do is insert menu
separators in a menu. is there a function like 
gtk_menu_separator_new()?

i tried gtk_hseparator_new() but it complied it wasn't a menu_item.
so, how could I do?
