Yes, but there are some machines that are still running SunOS 4.1.x
and some people who are still using them. It doesn't matter if these
machines are not supported anymore -- they are still working and they
will keep on running SunOS 4.1.x until their hard disk crashes or
their CPU burns.

Personally, I am using a Ultra 1 Creator running Solaris 2.5.1, so I
have little interest in the old SunOS. But I have been asked to
compile a small GTK application on an old Sparc 10 machine that is
still using SunOS 4.1.3_U1. It looks like this old box will not be
replaced or upgraded soon, and the administrator of that machine asked
me to install GTK on it.

That Sparc 10 is used as a disk server, so it would be a bad idea to
turn it into an X terminal... ;-) Yes, I know that it would be a
very good idea to upgrade it to Solaris 2.5 or 2.6, but this is not
under my control.

After making the few changes that I reported on this list, GTK
compiled and installed without problems. The amount of effort to
support SunOS 4.1.x was not so big and it allowed me to find several
problems in the configure script that were also affecting other
systems. So why shouldn't we support this system?

The GTK application that I had to install on that machine runs fine,
by the way...
