xrdb vs gtk_style ?

Hi,

I'm pretty sure this topic has been discussed before. If so, can
anyone point me to web pages/mailing list archives ?

Why is the .gtkrc parsing stuff necessary, when an equally powerful
mechanism exists via xrdb and .Xdefaults ? Going with xrdb has the
following advantages:

(a) Avoiding code duplication
(b) Customization familiar to most X windows users
(c) In a networked environment, remote applications can query the X
    server for this data.

Perhaps the gtk style mechanism can be made to work on top of xrdb
using gtk*button*fg etc resources in .Xdefaults ?
