One possibility is that you originally ran --configure without a
--prefix option, built Pango, then re-ran --configure with a --prefix
option before installing.

Things can get confused in that case.

So you might want to try rebuilding and installing Pango after typing
'make clean' to remove any object files that might contain the original
paths.
