Pango font description strings

The Gnome/Pango documentation (at
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/pango/pango-Fonts.html#pango-font-d
escription-from-string) says that font description strings have the form
"[FAMILY-LIST] [STYLE-OPTIONS] [SIZE]" and then briefly describes each of
the fields.  How can I tell what values are supported for these fields on
a given system?  Is there a way to get Pango to list the combinations that
will actually have an effect based on the fonts that are actually
installed, for instance?
