Are you loading the font from a FT Fontmap?
How are you getting the fontmap?
Are you using pango_ft2_font_map_for_display?
I seem to recall getting a similiar problem where I tried to use one of 
the FT font methods using the default fontmap from a PangoLayout.
Fixed it by using pango_ft2_font_map_for_display() to get a valid fontmap
