it is a rather raw draft made with xfig. Caption:
on the l.h.s. the metrics as returned by pango_layout_get_extents. On the
r.h.s the metrics as returned by pango_layout_line_get_extents.
The black dot denotes the reference point, that is the origin. Arrows show the
direction in which the coordinates grow. Hence, in the diagram on
the left, the ascent is negative but the descent is positive. In the diagram
on the right, both properties are positive. Note that, in the diagram on the
left, it is not possible to compute the baseline of the characters (the dotted
line on which the characters lay).

Both the english and the diagram can be improved. Which formats are suitable
for inclusion into Pango's docs?
