Thanks to the people who responded to my query about my Yiddish input
method for gtk+.
Edward Trager suggested I use SCIM instead. However, SCIM doesn't have
any apparent way either to discover surrounding context (which I would
like to have if the user moves the cursor by a mouse click or a
backspace) or a way to delete committed text (which I use to change my
mind about proper forms). So I don't plan to pursue SCIM.
Jonathan Ben Avraham suggested I start with a Hebrew IM. My purpose is
to allow me to type Romanized Yiddish using a standard Latin keyboard
and get proper Yiddish letters. The Hebrew keyboard is completely
foreign to me.
Jonathan also suggested we could use the same idea (erasing committed
letters) for Arabic. I think this suggestion has merit, and I have
built a small demonstration program to pursue it. But I don't know
enough Arabic to decide (1) what is the most natural transliteration
scheme, and (2) what rules govern proper orthography.
I would still like to know how to get my IM accepted into the source
tree as modules/input/imyiddish.c. A current version is available at
http://www.cs.uky.edu/~raphael/private/imyiddish.c .
