No, that's not the version of XFree86, or you aren't using Red Hat Linux
8.0.

The problem is probably that you have a font installed that is confusing
GTK+. Two likely candidates are:

 - The ZYSong GB18030 font that comes with commercial versions of 
   Red Hat 8.0.

 - FreeSans

If you are using a font with Arabic glyphs but no GSUB/GPOS tables, then
Pango will not be able to correctly shape the output.
