And, once you've done this, the LC_CTYPE based font selection will 
actually be doing you a favor -- fontconfig will pick a font designed for 
traditional Chinese rather than simplified Chinese, Japanese or Korean to
display your Chinese text.

It would be nice if Pango exposed language tags to applications so that
the selection of fonts could happen at a much finer grain than is 
currently supported.
