Pango viewer-ft2 problem

When I run viewer-ft2 from Pango 0.15, I get an impressive list of
font families in the "Family" menu, but the viewer bitmap pane is
stubbornly blank no matter which font family I select.

The only error message that I get is:

   GRuntime-CRITICAL **:file gsignal.c: line 1223
   (g_signal_connect_closure_by_id): assertion `signal_id > 0' failed

but that doesn't appear to relate to FT2 or Pango.

I am using FreeType 2.0.2, Pango 0.15, GTK+ 1.3.4, and GLib 1.3.4 with
RedHat Linux 7.0.

What am I missing that makes viewer-ft2 not work?
