Great that it is known. It does not sound like the problem is well
understood though :-(

I would have betted that "rotated text" uses a background pixmap since
the error looks the same (misplaced screen content).

Server bug is indead worst case: People (using Xorg 6.8.2) have to
upgrade their X server when switching to gtk 2.7 :-(

PS: I did not see any performance problems with gtk+ 2.7 but AMD64 users
rarely can given the speed of the processor.
